Tips to Help Teething Toddlers

We know this can be a difficult development stage for everyone so here are some tips to help parents manage teething in toddlers:

  • Recognize the Signs: Understand the common signs of teething, which may include drooling, irritability, swollen or red gums, biting on objects, disturbed sleep, and fussiness.
  • Offer Teething Toys: Provide safe teething toys or rings made of rubber like those sold by Mushroom and Co. Chewing on these can help relieve gum discomfort.
  • Chill Teething Toys: Refrigerate teething toys, not freeze them, as extremely cold items can harm the gums. The coolness can provide relief when the child chews on them.
  • Cold Washcloth: Dampen a clean washcloth, then twist and place it in the fridge for a short time (not the freezer). Allow your child to chew on the cold, textured surface.
  • Gentle Gum Massage: Wash your hands thoroughly, then use a clean finger to gently massage your child's gums. This can help soothe discomfort. You can also use a clean, damp washcloth.
  • Distraction: Offer engaging and comforting activities to distract your child from the discomfort. Singing, playing, or going for a walk can help redirect their attention.
  • Proper Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene by wiping your child's gums with a clean, damp cloth after meals and before bedtime. Once teeth appear, start brushing with a soft-bristle toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Comfort and Cuddles: Sometimes, all a teething toddler needs is some extra comfort and cuddles from parents. Offering reassurance and love can help them cope with the discomfort.
  • Drool Management: Be prepared for increased drooling during teething. Use bibs to keep your child dry and change them as needed to prevent skin irritation.
  • Stick to Routines: Try to maintain regular routines as much as possible. Consistency can provide comfort during periods of change, including teething.

Teething Won’t Last Forever

Remember that teething is a temporary phase, and the discomfort will eventually pass. Be patient, provide comfort, and monitor your child's condition. Every child is different, so it's important to find what works best for your little one to help them through this milestone.
